GYROKINESIS®
Gyrokinesis methodology was devised by Juliu Horvath. It was developed from his original method which he devised as a result of his own personal battle with chronic back pain and other injuries. The only tools required for Gyrokinesis are a low stool and a specially designed mat, although Pilates or yoga mats can easily be substituted.
Whilst the method embraces key principles also found in yoga, dance, gymnastics and tai chi, it exists as a unique methodology which invigorates and re-educates the body to move with fluidity, relaxation and power. Indeed, fluidity is essential and postures are not held for long periods of time. Instead, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected though the use of the breath, making exercises appear and feel more like a dance than traditional yoga.
As with the Gyrotonic methodology, Gyrokinesis exercise works the entire body utilising the seven natural elements of spinal motion as well as the articulation of all other joints . Gyrokinesis exercises gently work the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating exercises. Movement stimulates the body’s internal organs and different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated.
The beginner classes start with a self-massage and simple breathing patterns to awaken the body. The next focus is on the spine and pelvis. Seated on low stools, the class mobilizes the spine through a series of arching, curling, bending, twisting and spiraling movements. These same movement patterns are expanded to release the hip, knee, hamstring, quadriceps and so on, in all possible directions: front, back, twisting and turning. The corresponding breathing patterns in every movement stimulate the nervous system, open up the energy pathways and oxygenate the blood. The more advanced classes add endurance training to bodies prepared for more strenuous activities. The classes encompass not only sitting but also laying and standing positions.
In short, GYROKINESIS® invigorates and re-educates the body to move with fluidity, relaxation and power.
